Invited Talk - 5: Cyber Security : Some Thoughts

Speaker: Susheel Verma, DRDO

Speaker bio: Shri Susheel Verma is a post graduate in Electronics & Communication Engineering and is currently heading the Cyber Security Directorate at DRDO Headquarters.  He is also the Chief Information Security Officer of the organization. Currently he is involved in  implementing technological solutions -mostly indigenous- along with a robust policy framework for securing the organisation's cyber space. He has earlier worked at Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory in various capacities and was involved in substantial automation in the laboratory and setting up related Infra Structure – apart from other management activities – including managing the Zonal Recruitment Centre at Dehra Dun. As part of Directorate of Management Information Systems and Technologies, his efforts were devoted to successful enterprise wide implementation of MIS and other related IT services including video conference facility over DRDO Internet.

Invited Talk - 6: A Scalable Model for Multi-period Virtual Network Mapping for resilient Multi-site Data Centers

Speaker: Brigette Jaumard, Concordia Univ.

Speaker bio: Prof. Brigitte Jaumard holds a Concordia University Research Chair, Tier 1, on the Optimization of Communication Networks in the Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSE) Department at Concordia University. Her research focuses on mathematical modeling and algorithm design for large-scale optimization problems arising in communication networks, transportation networks and artificial intelligence. Recent studies include the design of the most efficient algorithms for the design and dimensioning of logical survivable topologies against single or multiple failures (e.g., survivable VPN topology over a service provider network). Other recent studies deal with dimensioning, provisioning and scheduling algorithms in optical grids or clouds, in broadband wireless networks and in passive optical networks. In Artificial Intelligence, contributions include the development of efficient optimization algorithms for probabilistic logic (reasoning under uncertainty) and for automated mechanical design in social networks (design of trust estimator tools). In transportation, her recent contributions include new algorithms for freight train scheduling and locomotive assignment subject to energy minimization. B. Jaumard has published over 300 papers in international journals in Operations Research and in Telecommunications.

Invited Talk - 7: How to write for and get published in international scientific journals

Speaker:
Swati Meherishi, Senior Editor-Applied Science and Engineering, Springer

Abstract: The face of scientific publishing is changing at  a very fast pace. Transitions from  print to electronic, onset of open access publishing and change in research demographics by geography, are a few of the issues being talked about in the publishing world today. How do these changes affect researchers? How can young researchers leverage these transitions to make their work visible? What is Open Access Publishing? What are citations and how are they calculated? These are just a few questions that Springer’s Author Workshops address. In this particular Author Workshop Lecture, Swati Meherishi will speak briefly about the transitions in and the needs of the publishing world and how young researchers need to prepare for it.  This author workshop has been devised specifically as a resource for teaching non-native English-speaking researchers, particularly young scientists how to achieve publication success. Some of the key topics covered during this presentation are:
1. Writing for International Journals: Language, Style and Accuracy
2. Selecting a Journal for your Manuscript
3. Peer Review and you
4. Plagiarism, Citations, Open Access: The Buzzwords of publishing
5. Book Writing

Speaker bio: Swati Meherishi is Senior Editor of Applied Sciences and Engineering at Springer. She has an extensive experience publishing engineering content across two continents. She holds degrees in Physics and Philosophy from the prestigious St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. Prior to Springer, Swati has managed  key engineering textbook portfolios in both India and the United States. At Springer, Swati manages a growing portfolio of journals, including both Springer-owned and key academic society journals, such as the Indian Geotechnical Journal, Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals, and the Institution of Engineers (India) journals.  Swati also publishes books across all domains of engineering and applied science.  She has successfully  launched several new book series, including a prestigious partnership series with the Infosys Science Foundation.   Her key aims at Springer are to grow Springer’s Engineering and Applied Sciences Portfolio in key interdisciplinary areas and to generate institutional and corporate partnerships. While her authors and editors hail from top institutes and corporate centers all around the globe, Swati’s focus remains to garner quality content from top engineering research schools across India in form of both books and journals. Swati is a member of the Materials Research Society (MRS), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the American Society of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).
